The popular Horse Head Nebula. Much of the image is Emission Nebula data, narrow color band emitted from hot glowing gases.
But the Horse Head and general are below it is a dark Nebula. Thick gases and dust particles that block out any light passing through that area. In effect the Horse Head is a projected shadow.

My first captured image. I shovelled 2"+ of snow off the deck and set up a C8 SCT with F/6.3 FR on CG5 Mount. Cold blustery night. I could not see Polaris due to the trees, so PA was a best guess.
No guiding, so 55 second subframes were taken using a Meade DSI IIC Camera. Imaged and processed in Meade AutoStar Software and post processed in PShop. Wind gusts scrapped a handful of subframes.
The MousePad frosted, so I decided to call it a night to avoid damaging the Laptop. I stood inside the walkout basement, watching the Laptop through a window. As the first dark subtracted and color converted subframe downloaded on to the Screen, my heart leapt. What an amazing moment. It was a glorious image to me at the time!

With the Moon glowing on a clear night, color and contrast get washed out. Here is an example of a image built fro using a Ha and a OIII Filter. By limiting the colorband to the narrow band of hot Hydrogen and hot Oxygeb gas emissions, you filter out the unwanted reflected Sunlight from the Moon.
In this case the Ha data is shown in Red, Ha and OIII data are used to synthesis the Green and OIII is shon as Blue.
Steve Cannistra's 2-color process is used to color the Ha and OIII Starfields to RGB coloring.
